What Not To Do After A Motorcycle Accident

There is nothing like the freedom and independence you get when riding a motorcycle. Sadly, that rush can be quickly shattered when an accident happens. Motorcyclist are involved in more accidents than any other vehicle. Although there are many ways an accident can happen, the most common cause of motorcycle accidents is because the other person failed to notice a bike when turning or misjudged their speed and distance.

This is why it's important for a motorcyclist to always be on the defensive. However, that may not be enough to protect you. So before you hop on your bike you should know what to do and not to do if you find yourself in an accident.

Do not delay medical attention! Even if your feeling fine, symptoms may not manifest for a few hours and some may not be obvious. For the sake of your health and well-being, don't hesitate to seek medical attention and treatment. If that's not enough to convince you, then you should also know that refusing or delaying medical attention and treatment could convince the insurance companies that you were never really hurt to begin with. Insurers are always looking for ways to avoid giving you the money you need so don't give them an excuse to.

Do not talk to anyone besides your lawyer or a police officer immediately after the accident! After you have been in an accident, it can be hard to piece together what happened at first. Not to mention that the trauma of the incident may effect your ability to speak about. You definitely don't want to admit fault since that can haunt you later on. If you do have to speak to someone, like an officer, give as many facts as you can and avoid anything you'd have to guess at.

Do not record a statement! Until you speak with a lawyer, you do not want there is be evidence against you. Statements can easily be taken our of context which can greatly hurt your claim later on. Having a lawyer with you can help you avoid problematic statements.

Do not assume that the other party will be honest or admit fault! Though some will be truthful about their mistakes, you can not rely on that for your case. If there are any witnesses make sure to get their name and contact information. Witnesses may not be necessary, but it can be wonderful back up when the other party is being dishonest. You should also take photos with your camera or cell phone of the accident scene as further proof of what happened.
