Traumatic Brain Injury In SW Florida Is Permanent

One of the most serious injuries that any Florida resident can receive is a traumatic brain injury, or TBI. TBI can victimize anyone in many ways, from a car accident victim in Punta Gorda to a slip and fall victim in a grocery store in Ft. Meyers. However, unlike other injuries, one of the most disturbing things about TBI is that the damage itself is permanent no matter the outcome.

What Is TBI?

Traumatic brain injury describes any harm to an accident victim due to a severe impact—or even penetration—to the brain. TBI typically occurs when an extreme motion causes the brain to collide with the skull’s inner surface. In some cases, an object penetrates the skull, such as construction, automobile, or firearm accident.

In all of these cases, the forces applied to the brain are so severe that brain cells can’t survive. Unfortunately, because the brain is responsible for so many daily life activities, from breathing to being able to remember facts and figures or even focus and concentrate on a problem that needs solving, various aspects of everyday life can be severely impacted by TBI.

The Consequences

The symptoms that can appear in the wake of TBI are incredibly varied due to the number of activities the brain regulates in the body. Some of the more notable symptoms may be:

• Sexual impotence
• Unstable emotions with unpredictable mood swings
• Inability to concentrate
• Loss of fine motor control
• Seizures of convulsions
• Migraines
• Vertigo, dizziness, or nausea
• Inability to wake up once asleep
• Difficulty falling asleep
• Blurred vision
• Ringing ears
• State of confusion/disorientation
• Slurred speech
• Coma

And many more.

However, what separates TBI from other injuries is that while it is possible to recover from the symptoms that may appear due to TBI, the damage itself is permanent. Brain cells are a “one time only” biological resource and do not grow back the way skin, hair, or fingernails do when damaged or removed.

Fortunately, many brain cells carry out redundant functions of the brain, so it’s sometimes possible for some symptoms to disappear as these brain cells take over as auxiliary functions for the original lost brain cells. However, in other less fortunate cases, the symptoms may be a new, permanent fact of life that must be adjusted for the remainder of an accident victim’s lifespan.

Get The Help You Need

TBI can take accident victims out of action for a significant period of time or, in the worst cases, leave them adjusted to life with a disability. In either case, if the injury occurred due to someone else’s negligence, it’s not fair to the accident victim to have to shoulder the burden of recovery. That should fall to the person responsible for the injury in the first place.

If you or someone you know has sustained a traumatic brain injury because of a person or business’s carelessness, get help.
