Tragic Crash in Englewood Underscores the Risks of Stop Sign Intersections

Residential intersections may seem routine, especially in communities like Englewood where traffic is light and familiar. But even with clear signage like stop signs, a split-second decision can have tragic consequences—especially when visibility is limited or speeds vary on crossing roads.
According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, in 2021, there were 3,753 traffic fatalities in Florida, signaling the need for stricter regulations and heightened awareness at intersections.
At All Injuries Law Firm, we've seen many cases like this throughout Charlotte County. We urge all drivers to take extra care when approaching stop signs—fully stop, assess all directions, and ensure the path is completely clear before proceeding. Misjudging speed or distance at an intersection can cost lives.
And just as critically —please always wear your seatbelt. In many crashes, serious injury or death occurs not just from the collision itself, but from being ejected from the vehicle. A seatbelt is often the difference between surviving or not.

Englewood Woman Dies in Tragic Stop Sign Crash Wednesday Morning
ENGLEWOOD, FL — A fatal crash claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman Tuesday morning at the intersection of Oceanspray Boulevard and Spinnaker Boulevard, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred just after 8:30 a.m., when a 73-year-old Englewood man driving a sport utility vehicle approached the intersection facing eastbound on Oceanspray Boulevard. He stopped at the posted stop sign before proceeding into the intersection.
At the same time, another sport utility vehicle—driven by the 55-year-old woman—was traveling south on Spinnaker Boulevard, approaching the intersection.
As the first vehicle entered the intersection, it collided with the right rear side of the southbound SUV.
The impact caused the second vehicle to overturn. Tragically, the woman—who was not wearing a seatbelt—was ejected from the SUV and pronounced deceased at the scene.
The driver of the first vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol has stated that the crash remains under active investigation by its Traffic Homicide Unit. No further details, including fault or potential citations, have been released at this time.
