GM Recalls Cars And SUVs Due To Transmission Leak

Do you own a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, or Cadillac? General Motors, which owns those four brands, is recalling more than 217,000 cars and SUVs throughout the US and Canada. The reason for the recall is two bolts that are missing from the stop-start mechanism, which can cause a transmission fluid leak. If that happens, the vehicle may stop moving or possibly catch fire. If you own a GM car, you should check if the model of your vehicle is among those that the company is recalling.

Which Models Are Being Recalled?

General Motors is recalling certain versions of cars and SUVs from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac manufactured between 2018 and 2020.

From Chevrolet:

2018 to 2020 Chevrolet Equinox
2018 to 2020 Chevrolet Traverse
2018 Chevrolet Malibu
2018 to 2019 Chevrolet Cruze
2019 to 2020 Chevrolet Blazer

From GMC:

2018 to 2020 GMC Terrain
2019 to 2020 GMC Acadia

From Buick:
2018 to 2019 Buick LaCrosse
2019 to 2020 Buick Encore
2019 to 2020 Buick Enclave

From Cadillac:

2019 to 2020 Cadillac XT4
2020 Cadillac XT6

Is Your Car Dangerous?

Transmission oil leakage is a common problem in cars. Such an issue is not extremely dangerous. However, continuing to drive while your car has a transmission leak is not a great idea since it may damage your car in the long run. It may also cause your car to suddenly stop working, which poses danger especially if it occurs while you are in transit. Another possible, though less common, problem caused by transmission fluid leakage is the possibility of your car catching fire.

Although a transmission fluid leak is not as potentially dangerous as other reasons car makers have issued a recall, it is not a problem that can be ignored. In fact, when a car starts to leak from years of wear and tear, mechanics advise to have it fixed immediately.

Manufacturer’s Liability

Fortunately for General Motors, no reports of crashes, fires, or injuries have been made so far. General Motors’ decision to recall the models with missing bolts will save motorists from potential accidents and help GM avoid manufacturer liability cases covered by personal injury law.

Manufacturer’s liability is a legal doctrine that holds manufacturers or sellers liable for harm caused by defects in their products. If the malfunctioning product harms or injures a person, the manufacturer or seller may be liable for compensation for the damages. By recalling defective products, the manufacturer exercises due diligence, which would protect them from negligence. However, people who have been hurt or injured prior to recall announcements such as GM’s or did not have prior knowledge of the recall may still seek restitution.
