What You Need To Know About The Two Massive Toyota Recalls

Toyota has issued two massive recalls this year. The first was part of the large Takata airbag recall and the second is for faulty fuel-emission controls. These two issues have lead to the recall of over 4 million Toyota vehicles. So if you drive a Toyota vehicle, here is what you need to know about these two recalls.

Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag recall is the largest automotive recall in history. After the deaths of 11 individuals, 85 million recalls have been issued for vehicles containing Takata airbags. The Takata airbags contain a defective deflator that can explode after a mild collision and can launch shrapnel into drivers and passengers. Several models of Toyota used the Takata airbags, so they issued a recall notice for all affected vehicles. To read the details of the recall, you can read the notice on the Toyota website at: http://www.toyota.com/recall/takata.

The Toyota vehicles affected by the Takata airbag recall include:

  • 2010-2011 4Runner

  • 2003-2011 Corolla

  • 2003-2011 Corolla Matrix

  • 2004-2005 Rav4

  • 2002-2007 Sequoia

  • 2003-2006 Tundra

  • 2006-2011 Yaris

Toyota also has provided a VIN checker on their website if you want to double check if your vehicle is on the list. Also, since more and more vehicles have been added to this recall list, it is a good idea to check in occasionally to see if your vehicle has been impacted even if it is not currently listed. If your vehicle has the defaulty Takata airbag inflator, you can take the vehicle to your local dealership and have the deflator replaced free of charge.

Toyota Fuel Emission Control Recall

Toyota issued another recall in June of 2016 for 2.67 million vehicles because of a faulty fuel emission control. The recall impacts Toyota vehicles made between 2006 and 2015 and are not the result of any reported injury or fatality. The fuel emissions controls are prone to cracking and can lead to fuel leaks over time. Fuel leaks are a serious fire hazard, so once the issues was discovered Toyota issued a voluntary recall. You can read more about the recalls at the Toyota website at: http://corporatenews.pressroom.toyota.com/section_display.cfm?section_id=639. The recall impacts:

  • 2006-2015 Prius

  • 2006-2015 Corolla

  • 2006-2015 Auris

If you are unsure if you are impacted by this recall, the Toyota website has a VIN lookup where you can check. If your vehicle is affected by the recall, you need to take it to the local Toyota dealership to have the fuel emission control replace free of charge. If you have any questions, you can contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331.

Automotive recalls like these two major Toyota recalls are unfortunately common. With the large scale manufacturing and distribution of vehicles, safety issues can fall through the cracks. In the case of a recall, manufacturers are liable for any injury sustained from their faulty product.
