Car Safety Tips For Driving Young Children

As parents we constantly worried about the safety of our children. This is especially true when we are driving with them. With over 276,000 vehicle accidents in Florida every year, it can be very nerve-racking to take your children in a vehicle. However you can protect your children in the case of an accident if you follow some basic safety tips. At All Injuries Law Firm, we understand the importance of keeping your children safe from injury, so we’ve put together a list of safety tips by age to make sure that if there ever is an accident your children a protected.

Car Safety Tips For Infants

Transporting infants requires more safety procedures than older children. Here are some tips to keep your infant safe while you are out on the road:

  • Buy a high quality, car safety seat. Consumer Reports has a great guide on how to pick the perfect car seat for your infant on their website: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/car-seats/buying-guide.htm

  • Make sure your child’s safety seat is properly installed in your vehicle. If even one latch is loose, the car seat may not offer full protection.

  • Check and double check to make sure your baby is properly strapped into their seat.

  • Try to drive while your baby is sleeping. That way, you do not get distracted if they start fussing or crying and can focus on the road.

  • Pull over if your baby starts crying. Never try to attend to a baby while you are driving.

  • Bring toys, snacks, and pacifiers to keep your baby entertained and reduce your distractions.

  • If possible, travel with another adult in the backseat to keep baby company so you can focus on the road.

Car Safety Tips For Toddlers

Toddlers can be a bit of a handful, especially when you are driving. Here are some tips to keep you both safe while you are on the road:

  • Always keep your toddler in their car seat. If they try to escape, pullover immediately and put them back in their seat before continuing to drive.

  • Never put your toddler in the front seat of your vehicle.

  • Bring toys, snacks, and games to keep your toddler entertained so they don’t start to fuss.

  • Stay focused on the road. If your child starts to fuss or throw a tantrum, pull over to the side until you can calm them down.

  • Never reach into the backseat to attend to your toddler while driving. This can lead to distracted driving.

If you follow these basic tips, you can travel with young children safely. However, if the worst happens and you are ever in an accident with your child, we can help.
